Technology advances at a very fast pace. So fast that traditional business can’t keep up no matter what. Yet, they have to if they want to preserve their competitive edge. Being able to constantly upgrade the corporate IT infrastructure and services and keep it all well integrated and useful is a very expensive challenge. It’s something few companies can afford. Unless the cloud helps out.

There’s a reason why enterprises continue to bet big on the multi-cloud and on cloud services in general. The most obvious one is that it provides a lot more resources a lot easier. And when done properly, it can really help a company of any size and any budget get the most out of the technologies it uses.

Things to take note

If a company uses the cloud properly, it will always have access to the latest technologies, the latest services and resources. And most of the heavy lifting is done by the provider which takes care of the infrastructure, support and so on.

Still, the company also has to have clear goals about what it wants to achieve with the cloud. The 2018 State of the Cloud report, for example, shows that typically each organization wastes 35% of its total cloud budget.

If you don’t have a clear idea of what you’re doing, it’s easy to have your costs rise without many benefits. So, a good idea is to have a slower, more careful approach if you’re just getting into the cloud. Review what technologies and services you’re using now and see what the available cloud alternatives are. Then slowly try them out and see what works out for you and your team and what doesn’t.

Picking the right platform

Obviously, this is one of the most popular questions. How do you pick the right platform out of so many? As with many things in life, there’s no single right answer. That’s why there are so many choices out there. Each of them is perfect for some and completely unsuitable for others.
And these days most platforms tend to offer so many different services, clients end up needing a few services from several providers in order to create their ideal personal solution. Hence, the rise in the multi-cloud strategy. Another benefit of the multi-cloud is that organizations aren’t tied to one provider.

Even if you do choose providers which are working out great for now, keep your eyes peeled. The cloud evolves and changes constantly and sometimes better offers might turn up in the most unexpected venues.

Mindset change

Proper use of the cloud also requires a bit of a mindset change. Before it was simple. Your organization builds the infrastructure it needs or pays someone to do so. In either case, everything is in house.

The cloud takes most of that away from the “house”. At first it’s not easy to accept that company data of any sort will be on some remote server. That may take some getting used to, but consider the benefits and the added better security or a proper data center.

There will be more mindset changes as you continue using the cloud. You will get used to being more flexible, act more quickly and stay on top of the latest developments. All of this will be beneficial to your overall business, as well.
