But there are some challenges with cloud computing that edge computing might solve:

• Data ownership and security – One of the biggest concerns about storing and processing data on the cloud is ownership and security. When opting to store sensitive data on a cloud platform, it’s important to figure out who the true owner of this data is. The obvious and easy answer may be the owner of the device uploading the data, but a closer look at the fine print may reveal otherwise. This raises serious concerns for individuals – and companies alike – who utilize connected devices across various aspects of their lives. IoT devices may prove to be a headache for privacy should proper storage encryption be held aloof.
  On the other hand, edge computing provides an attractive layer of security. This is due to the close, local storage that ensures your data are being kept and processed nearby. As a result, remote security attacks become more difficult.
• System crashes – System crashes are a major concern for the many who opt to store their data in the cloud. If the connection to the cloud is interrupted or the cloud service itself crashes, it may be impossible to utilize the IoT device itself. For many IoT devices, short term crashes may not be an inconvenience. However, in certain sectors such as health, software crashes in the middle of certain crises can lead to some very grave consequences.
  The advantage of processing and storing data locally is obvious here. The close proximity reduces latency, which in turn reduces the likelihood of system failure. Edge computing provides a more accessible resource, where system crashes can be handled swiftly. With more control over the local system itself, the concerns over remote systems controlled by third parties in far flung locations become less of an issue.

The simple answer to this is, it depends. By connecting certain IoT devices to the cloud, they are automatically granted the propensity to function with less resources. This reduces costs, which is an important factor to consider for both business and personal use of the IoT. But there are concerns as well, as with many technologies. Considering both benefits and challenges and weighing them alongside local system alternatives should provide an answer that varies depending on the IoT application in question. Perhaps utilizing both cloud and edge technologies may be an ideal solution for a lot of IoT applications.
