Top tech of 2018

2018 is gone! Yep, it is over, but was there anything that we should remember from it?

On the surface, nothing new – Intel kept manufacturing 14nm processors; Apple kept producing more of the same products, and Chinese companies kept flooding the world with less expensive, yet quality items.

However, there were some gems that ignited our interest. Let’s see the 5 best tech products of 2018! The ones that will really affect our lives.

Amazon Graviton CPU

Amazon is one of the biggest cloud service providers in the world. It launched its first processor based on ARM architecture with Cortex-A72 cores with a max clock of 2.3GHz. It doesn’t sound much, but when you hear that it is up to 45% cheaper than the competitors’ products with similar performance, you get why it exists. The primary purpose of Amazon Graviton is to be used in servers for virtualization.

Ray tracing for the masses – RTX graphic cards by Nvidia

Ray tracing technology has been around for a while. Big companies like Disney have used it to create marvelous movies with stunning effects. The big difference is that from 2018 on, the consumer can enjoy real-time ray tracing at home! Thanks to the RTX 2080 from Nvidia, now we can play games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider with a far more immersive experience.

Intel Neural Compute Stick

Up until this device, scientists who wanted to use deep learning needed to do it in the cloud. Now with this USB device, you can just plug it in a regular PC and create a deep learning interface offline. With this stick, you can do different types of visual processing.

Game streaming

Probably most of you have grown up, playing a console at home. Atari, Nintendo, Sega or something else connected to your TV. Things started changing in 2018 with Project Stream and xCloud. Now you can stream the game, without owning a console or physically buying a game. You can do it from different devices which use a client application to connect to a server, where all the work is done. This can mean the death of the console gaming as we know it. The cloud is far superior in terms of power. Consumers seem ok with subscription models, so it is just a matter of time until the traditional Play Station and Xbox disappear from our living rooms.

Foldable phone

This year we saw the first foldable phone, the Royale FlexPai, and it was disappointing. It was half-baked proof of a concept. But we shouldn’t give up on the technology. Almost all of the major players are preparing a version for 2019. We can see well-crafted devices that support 5G, use the latest processors (Snapdragon 855 or even Snapdragon 1000), and maybe even have full Windows support. FlexPai helped the industry by making it interesting again.

Now that we are in 2019, what are you excited about? What’s tech you can’t wait to get your hands on? Is it the 5G with its ridiculous speed or the futuristic taxis from Uber?
