AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX vs. Intel Core i9-7980XE

All hail the new king of desktop processors – AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2090WX!

Last year’s Ryzen Threadripper 1950X was a great processor, and money-wise it provided better value than Intel’s top proposal. However, overall it was weaker in the end.

This time the AMD team have outdone themselves. They have succeeded in increasing the number of cores in Threadripper 2090WX from 16 to 32 cores. As a result, there was a strong performance boost. Now Threadripper 2090WX is the best desktop processor out there, beating Intel’s Core i9-7980XE.

Both processors support multi-threading. Intel has the edge over AMD in performance per core, but in the multi-threading tasks such as compression, rendering, and transcoding the Threadripper is the winner. AMD also has ECC memory support for auto detection and correction of errors in data that professionals appreciate.

Both processors allow overclocking. Intel shows a bit better results, but AMD has an automated process called PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) that give you that extra power when you need it.
